COMMUNITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

Community Health came into being along with Primary Health Care. It is as a result of shortage of manpower in the health sector then, health service delivery coverage was grossly inadequate because the under served population was about 70-80%.

Before the inception of this course, there is already in existence the Medical Doctors who received their training in the Universities, the Nurses and midwives in the schools of Nursing, the Environmental Health workers in Schools of Hygiene etc. Health workers then were seen like angels, free relationship between the society and health workers was very little. Now with inception of Primary Health Care and its’ principles, the Community Health Workers who are its’ legitimate/purposeful children delivers healthcare service to individuals and families in a scientifically sound, socially acceptable, and affordable manner at their door steps. Hence the proportion of service delivery becomes very high and life expectancy also increased.

The courses started as pioneers’ courses in the Schools of Health Technologies with certificates for Community Health Aides, Community Health Assistants, and Community Health Supervisors and diploma for Community Health Officers training in University Teaching Hospitals.  Now the training is improved in the schools/College of Health Technology, we have certificate in Community Health (JCHEW), diploma in Community Health (CHEW) and higher diploma in Community Health (CHO) to be trained in the University Teaching Hospital.
